Newport Darlow Wasps v Glasgow A Plant Tigers
Premier League
Friday June 18th at 7pm
Meeting 19

Waspland Whisperings

For those of us who watched speedway under lights at Somerton Park between 1964 and 1977 this evening is very special as after a 33 year gap the sport can again be staged in an arena with floodlights.  For those who were not around in that era then you have a treat in store.

This gives the club more options over race day plus we have the potential to attract other events to the stadium and that obviously assists our ability to keep the sport alive in this city.

I would like to thank Gazza Ward and his volunteers who have turned the whole project around in just six week plus CEF for their input and expertise.  We have planned some extra factors to help us celebrate tonight including a Happy Hour in the Wasps Nest Bar between 6pm and 7pm, a firework display and a karaoke in the bar after the match.

Tonight we welcome a very much revamped and strengthened Glasgow side and the Wasps must be on their mettle to ensure we keep our momentum with respect to victories and so keep climbing the table.  We also have an interesting match at Stoke tomorrow evening and I feel we can also get something from that visit to Staffordshire.

Don't forget that speedway continues here on Sunday at 2.30pm when the Newport Hornets face the Isle of Wight Islanders in the National Trophy.

Time now to tame those Tigers.  So on with the racing!

For some reason this meeting sticks in my mind and that's unusual for me.

The fast times on the night and especially Alex Davies recording 58.09 extremely fast in those days for one of our reserves.

I've got a feeling that he actually held the track record briefly at some time before Andrew Tully?
