Welsh Open Championship
Sunday July 11th at 1pm
Meeting 24

Waspland Whisperings

Well it was back to business with the Wasps last weekend with three matches in three days.  Edinburgh showed why they are a force in the league but problems in the first few heats for Leigh, Todd and Craig did not give us the start we would have wanted.  Bright light was the display of newcomer Robin Aspegren not only his three heat wins from three complete rides here at Queensway Meadows but also two heat victories at Berwick where we came away with a league point incidentally.

Today is a special highlight in the Newport calendar as we welcome speedway fans from home and abroad to the Welsh Open Championship.  Again we have presented a competitive and interesting field and we suspect that Kevin Doolan is going to have to work hard to not only retain his title but even reach the Grand Final which carries prize money of £2,250 for that race alone.  So quite a climax in store for fans this afternoon.

We also welcome multi World Champion Ivan Mauger OBE MBE and with Barry Briggs having been with us last Sunday then Newport has had the presence of two of the greatest speedway riders of all time at our stadium within seven days.  Ivan will be promoting his new autobiography and is scheduled to be in the hospitality box at the end of the grandstand if you want to pop in.

Also a big welcome and thank you to the Super Seven start line ladies from Wolverhampton Speedway.  Their names are Laura, Stacey, Kayleigh and Sam and we are pleased to have you adding a dimension to our presentation today.

As I said earlier a good field and I can't wait for the tapes to rise.  So on with the racing!
